After the Snowstorm - Brycecanyon in Winter
Der #brycecanyon im #suedwesten der USA ist faszinierend und ein Eldorado für Fotografen. ich habe ihn immer wieder besucht, fasziniert von der einzigartigen Natur. Dabei entstanden zwar zahlreiche Bilder in genügender Qualität, aber keines hatte das gewisse „etwas“, was es besonders machen könnte. Im Februar vor zwei Jahren war ein großer Schneesturm angesagt und ich schaffte es gerade noch vor Einbruch der Dunkelheit zur #brycecanyonlodge. In der Nacht heulte der Sturm um das alte Holzhaus, aber am Morgen war es mit einmal vollkommen still. Als ich mich noch in der Dunkelheit auf den Weg machte, war hüfthoch Schnee gefallen und die Landschaft völlig verzaubert. Mit Mühe erreichte ich zum Sonnenaufgang den Canyon und war tief beeindruckt von der vollkommenen Stille, der klaren Luft und den Farben des Sonnenaufganges. Gegenüber den abziehenden Wolken des Schneesturms erschienen die Farben des Sonnenaufganges wie die Ouvertüre zu einer Sinfonie. Ganz allein an diesem eiskalten Wintermorgen fühlte ich einfach nur Dankbarkeit!
Reisen außerhalb der Saison in die Nationalparks der USA hat viele Vorteile: Sehr praktisch ist die Verfügbarkeit von Übernachtunsgmöglichkeiten in vielen Parks - und kostensparend ist es auch. Im Bryce Canyon zum Beispiel kann man kurzfristig Zimmer für wenig Geld buchen, andererseits ist die Auswahl aber auch eingeschränkter. Bis in den März hinein haben noch viele Unterkünfte rund um den Bryce Canyon geschlossen. Aus meiner Sicht der wichtigste Vorteil sind aber die wenigen Besucher - diesen Luxus lernt man vor allem dann schätzen, wenn man die Situation z.B. mit einem Besuch im September vergleicht. Wichtig bei Besuchen im Winter ist eine gute Vorbereitung: Der Bryce Canyon liegt ziemlich hoch (2800 m) und im Durchschnitt fallen im Winter zwischen November und März über zwei Meter Schnee. In dieser Zeit ragen die roten Felsspitzen aus dem weißen Pulverschnee – ein gigantischer Anblick! Man muss unbedingt warme Winterkleidung, Handschuhe, Kopfschutz usw einpacken. Die Tageshöchstwerte betragen etwa 4° C, aber nachts können die Temperaturen auf bis zu -34° C fallen. Da die Strassen nur eingeschränkt befahrbar sind, empfiehlt sich die Miete von Schneeketten bei der Autovermietung. Auch Kleinigkeiten wie Eiskratzer für die Scheiben sind hilfreich und in Mietwagen nicht vorhanden.
Der Bryce Canyon ist von Las Vegas, Nevada, und Salt Lake City, Utah, in weniger als vier Autostunden erreichbar. Während der Grand Canyon in Arizona vor allem durch seine Größe beeindruckt, wirkt der Bryce Canyon in Utah eher beschaulich und teilweise fragil. Im Laufe von Jahrmillionen schufen Wind, Eis und Wasser hier eine faszinierende Welt aus Felsnadeln, Steintürmen und tiefen Furchen. #brycecanyon is despite the crowds one of the Southwests prime locations and breathtaking for photographers. I have visited this beautiful place many times, fascinated by it’s unique nature and took numerous pictures of the sunrises and sunsets: But none had that certain "something" that could make it special. Two years ago in February, there was a big snowstorm forecasted and I made it to #brycecanyonlodge just before dark. That night the storm howled around the old wooden house, but in the morning it was suddenly quiet. When I set out while it was still dark, snow had fallen waist-deep and the landscape was completely enchanted. With difficulty I reached the canyon at sunrise and was completely touched by the perfect silence, the clear air and the colors of the sunrise, which seemed like the overture to a symphony against the departing clouds of the snowstorm. All alone on that freezing winter morning, I just felt gratitude!
Traveling to the national parks out of season has a couple of advantages: Very convenient is the availability of accommodation in many parks - and cost-saving it is too. In Bryce Canyon, for example, rooms are available at short notice for little money, but the choice is limited. Until march many accommodations around Bryce Canyon are still closed. But the most important advantage is the few visitors - during my last visit I was alone at sunrise and could enjoy the magnificent nature in silence and without the usual disturbances. You learn to appreciate this luxury especially when you compare the situation with a visit in September. It is important to be well prepared when visiting in winter: Bryce Canyon is located quite high (2800 m) and on average more than two meters of snow fall in winter between November and March. During this time, the red rock peaks rise out of the white powder snow - a gigantic sight! It is essential to pack warm winter clothing, gloves, head protection, etc. Daytime highs are around 4° C and at night temperatures can drop as low as -34° C. Since the roads are limited, it is recommended to rent snow chains from the car rental agency. Small items such as ice scrapers for the windows are also helpful and not available in rental cars.
Bryce Canyon is less than a four-hour drive from Las Vegas, Nevada, and Salt Lake City, Utah. While the Grand Canyon in Arizona impresses mainly by its size, Bryce Canyon in Utah seems rather contemplative and sometimes fragile. Over millions of years, wind, ice and water have created a fascinating world of rock needles, stone towers and deep ruts. In winter, the snow adds a special touch to this unique landscape.
